FLOOD PROTECTION IN ZBOROV, SLOVAKIA - ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT ASSESSMENT
Abstract
The main purpose of the construction of flood protection measure is to protect the urban area. Flood strategy should cover the entire river basin area and promote the coordinated development and management of actions regarding water, land and related resources. Structural measures (defence structures) will remain important elements and should primarily focus on the protection of human health and safety, and valuable goods and property. Intensive rainfall and springпїЅs snow melting occurrence leads to floods almost every year of the Nameless stream in the village Zborov and the disrupting river banks of RosuckпїЅ voda and Rakovec in the same village. It is obvious that the adjacent land as well as buildings, and occasionally also the lives of local inhabitants are threatened by this situation. Based on current situation in the village the regulation of the streams within the boundaries of the municipality Zborov, in terms of flood protection is needed. River bed need to stabilized and fortified and adjusted for ensuring the discharge capacity. The proposed modification of the river bed ensures adequate flood protection of the municipality. The objective of the paper is to assess environmental impacts of activities in water management, exactly flood mitigation measures with goal to select the best option for the permission process. Environmental impact assessment of streams regulation in the village Zborov in eastern Slovakia is the core of the paper. In the paper is mentioned how the water structures with flood protection function affect the environment in negative as well as in positive way.
