PROJECT CC-WATERS - CLIMATE CHANGE AND IMPACTS ON WATER SUPPLY
Abstract
Climate change can alter the demand for water, with demands increasing during dry, warm periods and decreasing during cool, wet periods. Climate change may impact a municipality’s ability to provide water to existing customers and their planning for the future. New sources of water may be required, and the evaluation of these new sources should consider potential climate change. Land use activities exert pressure on water resources. To anticipate this change in climate and land use activities and to assess its impacts on water resources is crucial for safeguarding future water supply. Project duration: 36 months (05.2009 – 04.2012) Partners: 18 partners from Austria, Slovenia, Romania, Italia, Bulgaria, Grecia, Croatia, Serbia, Ungaria From Romania the participants are Romanian Academy, Institute of Geography, National Meteorological Administration, National Institute of Hidrology and Water Management . National Institute of Hidrology and Water Management is project partener number 10. Is involved in three work pacheges : WP2 - Communication \& Dissemination WP4 - Water resources availability WP7 - Water Supply Management Measures The main tasks of the romanian partners in this project are to : • Analysis of actual status of groundwater resources (available groundwater resources, abstraction for water suplly from groundwater, groundwater levels tendance) ; • Evaluation of changes in availability of groundwater resources due to climate change and human impact (land-use change); • Study of the recharge conditions in proposed study areas (Banat and Oltenia Plains) and of the climate change impact on the recharge amount (in cooperation with P8 - Romanian Academy, Institute of Geography); • Analysis of Romanian legislation and measures in drinkinig water supply field; • Participating in developing of new common guidelines with project partners.
