RADIOACTIVE AND TRACE-ELEMENT ENRICHMENT OF UPPERMOST BROWN COAL LAYERS: AN ENVIRONMENTAL ASPECT (KANSK -ACHINSK COAL BASIN, WEST SIBERIA)
Abstract
Jurassic brown coal layers of the Kansk-Achinsk basin are the actual source for thermal power stations of West Siberia. The thick (up to 70 m) coal layers lay almost horizontally. Typical unaltered coal is low in trace elements and has, correspondingly, a low radioactivity. However, coal in the uppermost part of the thick dense layers is most often altered to become friable and acquire unusually high contents of some trace elements including natural radioactive ones. Brown coal samples from open-cut mines and natural outcrops were analyzed by a complex of methods, namely scintillation and semiconductor spectrometry, atomic absorption, and X-Ray analysis with synchrotron radiation. All methods were tested against standard samples of sediments, coal and ash. The uppermost coal layers were found out to be one to three orders of magnitude higher in V, Ni, Zn, Cu, Se, Mo, and U than unaltered brown coal.
