POWERING THE NORTH: A MULTI-CRITERIA ANALYSIS OF RENEWABLE ENERGY TRANSITION
Abstract
The transition to renewable energy is a high-priority agenda across Europe, particularly in Northern Europe. This shift is critical for achieving both environmental and economic sustainability. Northern Europe, with its high energy consumption and strong support for green policies, has the potential to lead in this transition. However, the region faces a unique set of social and ecological challenges that, if not carefully addressed, could undermine the sustainability of proposed solutions, harm natural ecosystems, and negatively affect societal well-being. In particular, a transition that proceeds too rapidly may pose serious risks. Understanding the factors that shape the development of the energy transition in this region is essential for ensuring its success. The interplay between benefits and risks, as well as the trade-offs arising from conflicting stakeholder interests, limited land availability, and other constraints, requires careful consideration. If not managed in an environmentally, socially, and economically sustainable manner, the transition may fail due to misunderstandings and knowledge gaps. This study applies a multi-criteria analysis to support policymakers and practitioners in addressing potential challenges and identifying strategies for a sustainable energy transition tailored to the specific context of Northern Europe.
