Abstract

The rapid pace of urbanization, demographic transformation, and climate-related challenges has intensified the need for inclusive and sustainable urban spaces that respond to the needs of diverse communities. Contemporary cities are increasingly characterized by social, cultural, economic, and demographic heterogeneity, requiring urban planning approaches that integrate social equity, environmental sustainability, accessibility, and participatory governance. This study explores the theoretical and practical dimensions of designing inclusive and sustainable urban spaces with a focus on enhancing quality of life, social cohesion, resilience, and long-term urban sustainability. The research examines the relationship between inclusive urban design and sustainable development by analyzing key dimensions such as universal accessibility, green infrastructure, public space equity, mobility justice, affordable housing, climate adaptation, and community participation. Particular attention is given to vulnerable and underrepresented groups, including elderly populations, people with disabilities, migrants, low-income households, and culturally diverse communities. The study investigates how urban morphology, spatial planning, and governance structures influence social inclusion and environmental performance. Using an interdisciplinary methodological framework combining systematic literature review, comparative case study analysis, policy evaluation, and spatial planning assessment, the research identifies best practices from European and global cities implementing inclusive and sustainable urban development models. The analysis also considers the role of smart city technologies, digital twins, GIS-based planning tools, and data-driven governance in supporting equitable urban transformation.
