THE EFFECT OF DRAINAGE ON STRENGTH DEVELOPMENT OF CEMENTED PASTE BACKFILL
Abstract
The increasing use of paste backfill in underground mining makes it necessary to quantify the effect of tailings properties, such as physical and chemical properties, on the performance properties of cemented paste backfill (CPB). The mechanical performance of CPB placed in underground openings (i.e. mine stopes) is often different from the one predicted in laboratory studies even under similar curing conditions of temperature and humidity. This observation is presumably due to the specific consolidation and drainage conditions encountered in the backfilled stopes. This paper presents the effect of drainage condition on the strength development of CPB samples prepared from sulphide rich tailing using ordinary Portland cement and granulated blast-furnace slag. The physical, chemical and mineralogical characteristics of the tailing and binder used were also examined in detail .It was found that, the strength acquisition of drained CPB samples was higher than undrained samples. At 28-day curing period, uniaxial compressive strengths of drained CPB samples produced from ordinary Portland cement (CEM I) and granulated blast furnace slag (GBFS) were found to be 10\% and15\% higher than un-drained ones, respectively.
