Abstract

Organic fibrous materials are among the promising building materials from the perspective of sustainable development, because easily renewable resources or secondary raw materials are used for their production. Currently, materials based on recycled textile fibers are of increasing importance, especially within the EU with regard to the requirements of Directive (EU) 2018/851 of the European Parliament and of the Council on waste. However, the problem with textiles is their diversity and combination of polymeric and natural substances, and partly also the use of various types of chemical additives with which the fibers are treated. The contribution deals with the issue of combustion in fibrous materials with different ratios of polymeric and natural textile fibers. The contribution combines conclusions from theoretical research and practically performed experimental work, especially from the perspective of studying the reaction to fire using the extended methodology according to EN ISO 11925-2. The results of the research work are of key importance for understanding the combustion process of organic fibrous materials and contribute to improving their resulting reaction to fire, both in terms of possible optimization of the composition of the materials, as well as in terms of choosing the appropriate bulk density and, if necessary, choosing the appropriate chemical treatment of the fibers.
