Abstract

The paper informs about the process of development and testing of dynamic cone penetration test semi-automatic data recorder. Dynamic probing is widely used in-situ testing procedure. The test principle is to drive a rod with a cone tip on its end into a soil by a ram. During the test an operator records the number of blow count and value of torque moment evaluating the soil lateral friction with rods. Keeping the handwritten record during test is a concentration demanding process providing large room for human error. Newly developed recording unit presented in paper would greatly facilitate the operator work by automatic data recording. Technological prototype of datalogger is specialized to operate with Borros DPT machine, which use is widespread in the Czech Republic. The electronic part and firmware development have been done simultaneously with the mechanical unit development. An important feature of the data logging system is the mechanical and functional robustness as a precondition of entire unit reliability. The final continuous digital record then can be effectively processed in order to find correlations between the result of penetration test and the physical index properties of the tested soil.
