Abstract

Carpathian Foredeep (CFD) is a mature Petroleum Province, where conventional biogenic gas has been produced since 1950s. At present the CFD is again object of petroleum prospecting, this time, as unconventional gas province. To improve resolution of this analysis, regional 3D structural model was constructed and divided into six main depositional complexes by developed on the basis of seismic data and geophysical logs interpretation. The model is located along the front of the Carpathians covering area ~4500 km2. It is composed of six geological complexes: -Lower Badenian clastic sediments, -Badenian evaporates, - fine grained clastic deposits; -lower turbiditic sequences; - upper turbiditic sequences (Upper Badenian and Sarmatian), -deltaic sediments and overburden. These sequences correspond to either chronostratigraphic or to depositional genetic complexes. Complexity of the geological setting in this zone is multiplied by the presence of the frontal Carpathian overthrust, which obliquely cuts autochthonous Miocene complexes. Interfering variable sedimentary and tectonic conditions were taken into account in procedure of structural and thickness maps construction. Multiphase process of map reconstruction involved mutually related procedures of seismic interpretations, logs interpretations, mapping and 3D structural modeling. Obtained results allow to visualize temporal migration of sedimentation conditions along the Carpathians front. Static models based on mapping results are under development. They will enable spatial distinction of potential unconventional gas zones in the research area. The fine-grained and turbiditic complexes seem to be the most prospective in the area.
