SUSTAINABLE RECOVERY OF PHOSPHORUS COMPOUNDS FROM SEWAGE SLUDGE IN THE CIRCULAR ECONOMY APPROACH

Abstract

Phosphorus, as one of the biogenic elements, is a compound conditioning the life of organisms, as well as plays an important role in the industry. The processes related to the recycling of phosphorus compounds and closing the loop of it, result primarily from the financial situation on world markets, the state of deposits of this element and the implementation of EU directives - Critical Raw Materials and Circular Economy. In the face of such conditions, the recovery of phosphorus from sewage sludge is an important element of the sustainable management of recyclable materials contained in the waste material. The work presents a comparison of currently used techniques of phosphorus recovery from sewage sludge and from ashes formed after their thermal transformation. The process efficiency and the economic aspect were taken as the analysis criterion. The existing solutions have been assessed. An attempt was also made to determine the possible directions of the development of the process of recovering phosphorus compounds from sewage sludge.
