Abstract

Quaternary sand-gravel mixture and sand deposits are among the most significant raw mineral resources needed for construction industry in Latvia. As regulations of Cabinet of Ministers of Republic of Latvia No. 570 states пїЅ geological prospecting has to consist of data acquired by drilling. Following study presents results of ground penetrating radar (GPR) surveying combined with traditional prospecting methods for A (proved) and N (probable) category sand-gravel and sand deposits. Geological prospecting for deposits was carried out using DSB1 Nordmeyer drilling rig according to A category natural resource volume calculation requirements. GPR surveying was carried out using 300 MHz and 75 MHz antennas. Electromagnetic wave velocities in sand and gravel layers were determined in two places using common midpoint measurements. Surface models generated in Surfer 13 software was used to calculate volume of mineral resources. Using combined data from drilling and GPR profiling, it was determined that volume of sand-gravel and sand is approximately 4% more than calculated only by using borehole data. Results show that in cases, when geological setting of deposits are complex or problems with borehole installation are encountered because of articulated relief, GPR profiling would be advisable to obtain additional information about geometry of deposit layers.
