Abstract

The paper deals with the causes of numerous local floods and flash floods in forest areas and neighbouring location. Forest wood mining forest roads and approach paths are proven to be the main cause of forest drainage and loss of its accumulation function. Forest roads intended for logging cause drainage of large areas, easy runoff of rainwater as well as subsequent drying of the soil, weakening of trees and devastation of the forest. Two successful projects for the recultivating of forest roads have been presented. Thanks to simple landscaping and the construction of reservoirs and polders, the ability to retain water was restored and the forest began to fulfill its function again. The results of the first project implemented in Tahanovce, marginal part of Kosice city in 2010 can be considered clearly successful, especially in terms of halting the occurrence of sudden floods. Slovak Academy of Science confirmed the effect of the rain retention in its annual report. The latest project implemented in November 2021 Czech Repulic is precisely documented, environmentally beneficial not only by reducing the risk of floods. It also pointed out the significant economic benefits for forestry.
