Abstract

Soil erosion is the most serious soil degradation on the territory of Bulgaria. Estimated average annual potential soil loss from sheet water erosion in Bulgaria amounts to 902.5 million tonnes. Over 68% of the territory of the administrative region of Kardzhali (East Rhodopes) is characterised by risk of sheet water erosion exceeding 100 t/ha y. The paper presents assessments of susceptibility to erosion of soils in the catchment of the Dzhebelska River (Eastern Rhodopes). The assessments are based on the USLE approach, which was adapted for Bulgarian conditions and integrated with GIS. It is established that the soil erodibility values of the soils distributed in the catchment area of the Dzhebelska River (Eastern Rhodopes), assessed as K-factor values vary from 0.005 to 0.042 t ha h / ha MJ mm. The largest percentage share (47%) of the lands in the catchment area of the Dzhebelska River is characterized by medium to high susceptibility to erosion (0.03-0.04 t ha h / MJ ha mm). Lands with low susceptibility to erosion (0.01-0.02 t ha h / MJ ha mm) have the lowest percentage share (1.72%).
