HORIZONTAL INTRAPLATE VELOCITY FIELD MODEL FOR THE TERRITORY OF BULGARIA DERIVED FROM GNSS SOLUTION
Abstract
With this publication is intended to demonstrate the possibility of practical realization of European Terrestrial Reference System 89 (ETRS89) for the territory of the Republic of Bulgaria, by developing an intraplate velocity field model using velocities of a network of continuously operating GNSS stations. The introduction of the ETRS89 is aiming to unify national reference systems for geodetic measurements, cartography, GIS, research and navigation in Europe. The EUREF Permanent GNSS Network (EPN), which consists of a network of continuously operating GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite Systems, such as GPS, GLONASS, Galileo, Beidou, ...) reference stations (CORS), provides access to the ETRS89 by making publicly available for the GNSS tracking data as well as precise positions, velocities and tropospheric parameters of all stations. For the territory of Bulgaria there is a single station classified in class A, named SOFI00BGR. Bulgaria is situated on the edge of the Eurasian tectonic plate, and given that the tectonic plates move as rigid blocks along the Earth?s surface and the Earth's crust must deform only on the border between plates, the calculated expected relative speeds grow in North-South direction in the range 1-5 mm/y, which characterizes the territory of active tectonic and seismic activity. Many authors investigate the territory as block-determinated in different aspects [3], [4], [7], [6], [8]. Some of the conclusions are that North Bulgarian territory is a part of the Eurasian plate, but there are two smaller plates in South-West and in South-East regions which have different velocity fields. In the current study is used data from 30 private COR stations, covering evenly throughout the country. The results shows horizontal movements in 5 regions and confirms conclusions of other authors for intraplate deformations. The clarification is that the horizontal output models are not constant within the territory of any micro plate region. It is a known fact and determines the conduct of numerous studies for locating local fault lines (In regions of Mesta/Dospat; Chirpan; Krupnik; Sofia, Pernik?). In the current study is used algorithm ?median estimation of local deformation? (MELD) by Corne Kreemer, W. Hammond and Geoffrey Blewitt. With this algorithm we can calculate local deformation (median strain tensor ? and median rotation rate vector ?) for each spherical triangle defined in local coordinates North and East. The reliability of the results obtained depends on the size and shape of the spherical triangle and that?s why is examined the optimal network configuration for the entire territory. With the horizontal intraplate velocity field are interpolated velocities of points from the National GPS Network (128 points), which is essentially a static and are compared with the published officially - the results are encouraging and improve practical realization of ETRS89 by CORS products.
