Abstract

The article represents the results of a multi-year (1995-2011) monitoring of wind waves in the northwestern part of the Black Sea. The author gives a clear-cut presentation of the regime and extreme characteristics of wind waves of the northwestern shelf of the Black Sea. The measurements were carried out on a stationary offshore platform Golitsino-4, located 50 km from the shore. A twisted resistive wave gage with a sampling resolution of 4 Hz and the possibility of registering wave heights up to 10 m was used to measure the wave heights. The registration of the wave heights was carried out during the 1995-2000 and 2008-2011, that is 12 years with the interruptions. As a result more than 31,000 wave records were accumulated over the entire observation period. In order to obtain the wave characteristics with a low probability of occurrence (once in 5, 10, 20, 30, 40, 50 years), the analytical distribution function of the extreme values of the investigated parameters was constructed. The distribution function was obtained by the annual maximum method with the use of GEV (Generalized Extreme Value). The monthly average height of significant waves was 0.4-0.48 m in summer months and 0.85-1 m in winter months. The maximum wave heights during the storms reached 4.8 m in summer and 8.76 m in winter. The most frequent during the summer months were smooth waves (0.1 m <Hs <0.5 m), during the winter months пїЅ slight waves (0.5 m <Hs <1.25 m). The height of significant waves, which is possible once in 10, 30 and 50 years, reaches respectively 3.8 m, 3.9 m and 4 m. The maximum wave height, possible once in 10, 30 and 50 years, can reach respectively 7.4 m, 8.6 m and 9.2 m.
