THE IMPACT OF MINING ACTIVITIES ON THE WATER QUALITY OF THE EAST JIU
Abstract
As a result of the massive industrialization, the eastern area of the Jiu Valley presents a significant degradation on the environment factors especially on the soil and water. The influence of mining activities on the environment begins with the prospecting and mining activity of the mining deposits and increases with the development of the productive activities. In the Eastern part of the Jiu Valley there are two active mining fields of a total of seven. The choice of the sites for the mining perimeters and the waste dumps was not made taking into account the protection of landscapes and natural attractions whose interest in undeniable. The major impact of mining on the East Jiu River is generated by: locating and building waste dumps, the evacuation of the waters from the aquifer formations, the superficial draining of water from rain fall (which crosses the mining works and the waste dumps), the movement of the smooth material by the droughts (which causes the load of the atmosphere with sediment particles, which are deposited even on the water meadows. The present paper analyses the disposition of the mines and the exercised pressures of the open mining and also of those permanently closed. For the evaluation of the impact of mining activities of the aquatic environment there were established sections of water related sampling related to the disposition of the mining precincts located along the East Jiu, and for the sampling and analysis there were used tools according to the national legislation in force.
