Abstract

The major changes occurred in Romanian mining industry imposed by the transition to the market economy, concentration of extraction to fewer output units in deeper seams, the high gas emission rates and coal rank, other current specific trends requires new methods to produce the optimum design and operation of a safe and economic methane drainage system. Under the circumstances, the paper describes a mathematical model together with a computer-aided optimization strategy to assist the analysis of the differences between predicted and actual methane drainage network performance. The paper is also aimed at developing the basic principles and structure required to elaborate and implement an algorithm and major requirements for a software based on a simulation model, together with an optimization strategy to assist Occupational Health and Safety experts and mining engineers to effectively monitor and control the operational state and parameters of the drainage networks and the overall performance of degasification system. The application is validated by performing an analysis of the performance characteristics of a methane drainage network operating at Lupeni Colliery from Jiu Valley coal basin.
