ASSESSING DANUBE RIVERBED MORPHOLOGY AS A RESPONSE TO NATURAL AND ANTHROPOGENIC CONDITIONS USING GIS: A CASE STUDY OF THE CEATAL IZMAIL BRANCHING AREA
Abstract
This paper aims to assess the trend of river morphological evolution and changes in the Danube riverbed sector, i.e., Ceatal Izmail, using GIS techniques. The sector is located on the Danube at Mile 43, where the river branches into Chilia and Tulcea tributaries. Therefore, three monitoring topo-bathymetric profiles (2018 and 2019) were performed on Danube (Mm 43), Chilia (Km 114) and Tulcea (Mm 42.5), under circumstances of high and low water levels. On the Danube (Mm 43), an asymmetry of the valley (right bank) accompanied by strong erosion, and an area with deposition authenticated by the development of young riparian vegetation (left bank) was noticed. On Chilia (Km 114), a strong asymmetry of the valley (left bank) associated by strong erosion, and a sediment deposition (right bank) was marked. Moreover, a strong erosion of the riverbed was detected in the central part of the section, probably due to eddy currents around the longitudinal embankment structure (created to protect the Tulcea left bank and to redirect water flux towards the waterways). As well, behind the embankment, an area with sediment deposition was evidenced by the fluvial islet apparition. On Tulcea (Mm 42.5), an asymmetry of the valley (left bank) along with erosion of the riverbed and banks was observed, contrary to sediment depositions (right bank). In conclusion, on certain sections, Ceatal Izmail is in an advance state of alternate erosion and deposition caused by local morphological changes. Identifying the changes and their effects on the morphology of riverbed and riverside banks is imperative due to intense hydrodynamics of this bifurcation with repercussion on downstream confluences.
