Abstract

Our paper presents the results of a study concerning the possibility to use mushrooms for soil remediation after mining exploitation. The samples have been harvested from Calimani Mountains (Northern Carpathians) an important site for sulphur extraction in Romania. Despite, the sulphur mines have been closed from several years, soil and vegetation are still affected and is necessary to improve theirs qualities especially by biological methods. By oxidation processes, sulphur is transformed in air to oxides especially sulphur dioxide, which by water reaction forms acids. An important quantity of these oxides could be retained and transformed in sulphites by plants, respectively by mushrooms. In our study have been analysed 19 samples harvested in July and October 2007, from this critical area. After water extraction of samples, the sulphites content has been determined by a spectrophotometric method. The results were expressed in mg sulphites/kg product dried at 105oC. Our values were between 491.10 mg (Fomitopsis pinicoloa, Calimani Mountains) and 12649.80 mg (Laccaria lacata, Reservation with Pinus cembra 1). The sulphites content presents great variation for the different samples harvested from the same area. In the case of Laccaria laccata samples, the values of sulphites depend by harvesting place, the sample harvested from Ilva Dump cumulate 4772.70 mg, in the same time two samples harvested from Reservation with Pinus cembra cumulate 12649.80 mg, respectively 2951.40 mg. The samples harvested in July contain greater quantities of sulphites than samples from October. For some sample, sulphite content is direct correlated with reductible glucides and soluble proteins content: Suillus luteus (Pine Dump 2), Suillus variegatus (Reservation with Pinus cembra) and Suillus luteus (Ilva Dump 1).
