Abstract

Tarnow region is supplied with water from intensively exploited groundwater and surface water intakes located in the small area between Dunajec and Bia?a rivers. Three groundwater intakes are a part of the Tarnow Municipal Water Service, i.e. ?wierczkпїЅw, K?pa Bogumi?owicka and newly constructed Zbylitowska GпїЅra intake, as well as the intake of surface water in Zbylitowska GпїЅra. The chemical company Zak?ady Azotowe in TarnпїЅw has groundwater intake located in TarnпїЅw-Mo?cice, and one of surface water located nearby. Groundwater intakes draw water of the Quaternary aquifer (sandy and gravel deposits, mixed with pebbles, with hydraulic conductivity from a dozen to more than 100 m/d), recharged directly with rainfall and infiltrating river water, and locally with water from irrigation ditches. Exploitation of water takes place in the conditions involving several major sources of contamination. The magnitude evaluation of exploitable resources of subject intakes involved calibrated numerical model of the aquiferпїЅs hydrogeological structure, developed on the basis of the actual size of groundwater withdrawal and depth to groundwater table. The model was modified and updated on the basis of the existing single-layer numerical model, that maps the hydrogeological conditions occurring in the Quaternary aquifer. As a part of predictive tests, the research team used the model to map average low water levels in surface flows, and then simulated the operation of individual intakes in order to obtain the greatest possible efficiency. Possible withdrawal can be estimated at around 81.5% of the resources.
