Abstract

The paper presents research conducted in the city of Tyumen as a large Siberian industrial center to understand the factors of quality of the social space development. The development of Russian cities is carried out, chaotically, but not systematically. The main tools for the development of urban spaces are territorial planning, urban policy, where the social factor plays a non-primary role. It was shown that urban space should meet the needs of residents, not only from the point of view of infrastructure and housing conditions, but also from the position of quality of the social space of the city. The applied social mapping method and Geographic Information System (GIS) framework, based on QGIS software, allowed analyzing the problems of the cityпїЅs social space development. The paper proposed three levels of the mapping process and various map types depending on the selected indicators (household incomes, poverty as well as social and associative (alcoholism) activity). Authors assess the mutual influence of chosen basic indicators on the development of the city and identify challenges of urban areas development.
