Abstract

A concept of Geographical Information System (GIS) refers to a special system developed to collect, store, analyse and visualise geographical spatial data and related attribute data. GIS is not only a software which enables the system, but it also comprises collected data and specific organisational procedures. The most important advantages of GIS include the possibility of connecting spatial data and described attributes derived from different sources, and above all пїЅ the ability to perform geospatial analyses. One of the most significant aspects of groundwater management is to define areas advantageous for localization of groundwater intakes. There are many aspects and factors deciding whether the area was properly selected. Additionally, the optimization analysis of the selection is based on a multi-criteria review. The article presents the GIS technology applied as support for the selection of an optimal localization of groundwater intakes within the research area (region located northwest of Cz?stochowa). After input data preparation, the research team attempted to develop a methodology for a multi-criteria analysis and determination system for proper criteria and weights selection. The results indicate the degree of usefulness of selected areas for potential location of groundwater intakes, in terms of geology and sozology.
