ENGINEERING GEOLOGICAL AND GEOTECHNICAL INVESTIGATIONS FOR DESIGN OF HIGWAY E-80 NIS - MERDARE
Abstract
The highway E-80 is of strategic importance for the development of the main regional transport networks for South East Europe and it will provide optimal road connection with the Republic of Bulgaria and the Republic of Albania and wider with the other countries of the European Union. For the needs of preliminary design of the highway, specific geological investigations were performed (terrain and laboratory). Investigations are mainly focused on those parts of the terrain where the construction of tunnels, larger bridges, interchanges and other engineering structures are planned. In this regard, geological investigations related to the wider area of the highway route were performed, as well as detailed geotechnical investigations for the whole area of the route at the locations of structures and open parts of the highway route. The main goal of the wider area highway route investigations is registration of large - regional structures and evaluation of area seismic activity and its effect on the stability of the future highway structures. The aim of detailed investigations is to define geotechnical conditions of carrying out of highway route open parts and especially characteristic structures (tunnels, bridges, overpasses, embankments, cuts etc.). In this paper, we will present performed investigation works, engineering geological map, extracted zones with dominate geological units, geomorphological occurrences and map of engineering geological limitations.
