Abstract

A summary of abundance, quality and usage areas of the known bentonite occurrences in Turkey has been explained for this study. Bentonite that is one of the most important and abundant clays of Turkey has lower cost in comparison to other raw materials. Turkey has significant resources of bentonite that have been reported approximately 370 million tons base reserve. Also Turkey is one of the leading producers with 950 000 tons per year. Lower cost of bentonite in comparison to other raw materials for various usage increases demand for it. Turkish bentonite has various usages that depend on its properties. Calcium and sodium bentonite minerals are seen in Turkey. Calcium bentonites are the common type and widespread. On the other hand, sodium bentonites occur in central Anatolia. It is important to carry out research to develop the quality of the actual occurrences and to explore new and better quality deposits for their contribution to the Turkish economies.
