EXAMINATION OF THE ACCESS VIADUCTS OF THE GIURGIU - RUSE BRIDGE USING TEST CONVOYS
Abstract
The Giurgiu-Ruse Bridge, also known as ?The Friendship Bridge?, is one of the two bridges over the Danube River, which links Romania and Bulgaria aside with the Calafat ? Vidin Bridge. Between 2014 and 2016 the Romanian side of the Giurgiu-Ruse Bridge was retrofitted. After finishing the works, static and dynamic trials were done in order to attest the behavior of the structure under test loads. The superstructure of the access viaducts is made up of independent upper carriageway steel decks, simply supported beams (12 spans of 33.60m each) composed of steel ?I? shape girders strapped with rivets. The cross section of these decks is made up of 4 identical girders arranged symmetrical with respect to axis of the structure with a concrete deck on top 20cm to 25cm thick composed of precast elements. The retrofitting solution prescribed, among other things, to link the slab with the girders using flexible metallic connections welded on the upper flanges of the beams and thus obtaining a composite section. This paper will describe both the testing procedures done and the equipment used for the measurements. The results obtained through static and dynamic testing of the Romanian access viaducts will also be thoroughly presented. The test project was elaborated using a finite element model. Discussions will be made regarding the different results obtained through calculus and the experimental ones and conclusions will be made regarding the efficiency of the tests and the overall behavior of the Giurgiu-Ruse access viaducts resistance structure.
