MARINE WATER POLLUTION BY HEAVY METALS IN THE SEVASLOPOL COASTAL AREA OF BLACK SEA
Abstract
This paper presents the results of the sea water heavy metals (Hg, Pb, Cd, As, Zn, Fe, Ni, Cu) content examination in the coastal area of the Sevastopol. The water pollution index was calculated using 4 parameters with the obligatory inclusion of dissolved oxygen. Determination of metal content in water samples was performed by the method of inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometer PlasmaQuant MS Elite (Analytik Jena, Germany). The determination of the concentration of each of the chemical elements in seawater showed their significant variability across different coastal areas. Results indicate that the content of Hg, Pb, Cd, As, Zn overall do not exceed the maximum permissible concentration (MPC). Although concentrations of Ni, Fe and Cu in some cases showed 3-6 times exceedances, which could be explained by the close proximity of airfield and maritime navigation to the sampling sites. Based on the results of the quantitative determination of individual elements concentrations water quality assessed by the integral water pollution index (WPI) it can be concluded that coastal waters can be characterized as clean and relatively clean. Contaminated and muddy waters are present mainly near the Kacha and Orlovka villages and quay of Kazacha and Balaklava Bay. Obtained results indicate growing impact of technogenic load, as well as the complexity of the combined action of heavy metals and arsenic on the components of ecosystems and their cross-border circulation in the environment requires preventive measures to control and limit the pollution.
