Abstract

Although significant progress has been made in maintaining equipment in industrial systems in an effective manner, maintenance of equipment remains a challenge due to factors such as size, cost, complexity, and competition. Any undesired event may present an immediate environmental, performance, or safety implication. Thus, there is a need for effective maintenance engineering and maintenance practices that will positively influence critical success factors such as safety, product quality, price and profitability. Based on the data acquired over the time in a representative metal processing company from Arad County, the paper aims at performing an analysis of the maintenance times for typical machinery used for production. The study combines practical and theoretical methods: during the last five years all the data related to maintenance and machine-down time for three machines was recorded in the ?U sheet? of the equipment then transferred to a properly structured database. Applying statistical tools and presenting results in a user friendly form, the study supplies useful information to the management and to the maintenance department of the company. Thus, the maintenance times and the type of repairs can be predicted and the management can use this study for correct dimensioning of the maintenance team and optimizing the time allotment for the workers.
