Abstract

The process of Underground Coal Gasification involves risks of uncontrolled/unpredictable course of the gasification process. To minimize the risks of contaminants leaking outside the georeactor zone in the event of emergency is of a significant importance when aiming to maintain safe course of the process. The article presents methods and measures aimed at reducing the risk. These methods are based on reduction of the impact of released gaseous contaminants generated during the process. In order to achieve it, a set of materials from among a large number of materials was selected and later examined in terms of level of effectiveness of removing gaseous pollutants in emergency situations. The group of selected materials was marked as пїЅreactive materialsпїЅ due to its characteristics. Moreover, the article suggests methods and ways of implementing these materials in order to achieve the highest effectiveness of protection. The conducted tests included a thermogravimetric method, and their main aim was to check the level of suitability of the materials selected for the capture process of process gases from the coal gasification experiment. Presented test results show that the appropriate choice of reactive materials in the process of underground coal gasification will significantly improve the control of operating conditions in the georeactor, ensure an active groundwater flow, and reduce the effects of leakage outside the georeactor zone. The results and further study of the effectiveness of the use of reactive materials will allow to develop a method that would reduce the risk of spread of gaseous contaminants and further migration of gas into the rock mass. The developed method can be applied in the process as an additional protection measure in the event of potential emergency.
