Abstract

The aim of the study is to present variation of days with hail precipitation in different regions of Bulgaria and seasonal synoptic classification of such type of extreme events. Examined period is 1991 – 2020. Time-space distributions of days with hail events, detected in at least one station from meteorological network of the National Institute of Meteorology and Hydrology are presented, as well as the regime of wide-spread hail events. The hail precipitation which are detected in at least 4 districts in Bulgaria at same day was considered like wide-spread events. The classification of synoptic situations, which are divided in different synoptic circulation types, taking into account pressure fields on 500 hPa and sea level, is also presented only for large-scale events. For whole period 2510 days with such events are analyzed. One third of them can be defined as wide-spread. The applied Mann-Kendall test show statistically insignificant decreasing tendency in annual number of days with hail precipitation, while in the same time the number of wide-spread events slightly increase during the observed 30-years period. Statistically significant increase of hail precipitation days in March and May are established. More than 55% of all hail days are observed in May and June with maximum for majority of districts in Bulgaria in May. Almost 93% of cases occurred in warm half of the year (April-September). According to applied synoptic classification, 42% of the days are under the influence of cyclones or throws at 500 hPa baric level, positioned west of the territory of the country and 35% of the hail events are in low gradient baric field at sea level pressure.
