PROPOSAL OF UTILIZATION OF MINING PRESERVE IN GELNICA WITHIN SUPPORT OF DEVELOPMENT OF LOCAL TOURISM

Abstract

Gelnica is a town in the Kosice Region of Eastern Slovakia. It is located in the northern part of the Slovak Ore Mountains, in the Hnilec river valley, which flows a few kilometers downstream into Hornad. The town lies at the both banks of Hnilec, has an altitude of 375 meters and is located around 38 kilometers from Kosice. Gelnica is a city with rich mining history and by precisely utilizing its history we can develop tourism in the region. Beside history there is beautiful nature around the city, which offers many opportunities for development of tourism. The contribution focuses on abandoned mining excavations, which renovation can substantially advance local tourism and lead to higher employment and many additional positive aspects. Through SWOT analysis the contribution points out external influences, which could bring several positive enhancements in employment for local population. The goal of the contribution is support of tourism development in Gelnica mining preserve through the use of old mining excavations, which can be found in this region and turn Gelnica into attractive destination for development of local tourism.
