Abstract

Water is a key element and plays a central and critical role in all aspects of our life, environment, agriculture, economies, food security etc. Water scarcity in developing countries is driven by climate change and has triggered the need for urgent solutions across the continents. While opportunities exist to enhance currently available fresh water resources, including desalination and wastewater treatment, these methods have been environmentally devastating and costly. Atmospheric extraction could revolutionize access to fresh water, as it can be utilized in generating fresh water where it is currently unavailable or inaccessible. This paper proposes a novel technique for enhancing the water extraction from air moisture based on the utilization of combined processes that include desiccant wheel, Metal Organic Framework and compressor based evaporator cycle. Such a system is expected to operate at low relative humidity as low as 20 % while offering high rate of water production in the range of 15 liter per hour per unit model in normal operating conditions. In this paper, the system conceptual design is illustrated and processes are described in details. In addition, a scaled down prototype is developed, system preliminary performance is predicted and experimental results are obtained. The system is designed with the cost effectiveness is taken into consideration and shall be capable of operating in non-electrified areas using the PV solar system.
