Abstract

The design of personalized footwear insoles involves modelling the 3D shape of the insole based on the individual feet plantar surface shape and dimensions. The advantage of custom made insoles over the mass produced ones are represented by their enhanced functionality. Custom made insoles are recommended for subjects with various foot health disorders and for subjects who undertake intensive physical activities like athletes and soldiers. During human life time, under repetitive mechanical stress, feet suffers different anatomical alterations that lead to pain and discomfort during walking and standing. A serious problem of improper footwear is represented by the altering of the natural ability of the foot to control the impact energy during walking and to provide a strong and stable support base. The shape and mechanical properties of soles and insoles have an important role in plantar pressure distribution and postural stability during walking and standing. Health is an important issue for general population and inappropriate footwear increases the risk of foot disorders and leads to alteration of gait and balance with further serious implications. The use of proper footwear components like personalized insoles indicates a significant improvement in static and dynamic balance performance and gait. Currently, due to the developments in the field of 3D printing, new possibilities for footwear manufacturing are arising. 3D printers can be used for prototyping footwear components, shortening the development process of the final product. Also, due to the high versatility of 3D printers, they represent a more viable solution then traditional manufacturing techniques that are using CNC machine tools.
