Abstract

Concrete constructions are normally reinforced with steel, which is protected by high alkalinity of the concrete against the effects of corrosion. The steel reinforcement corrosion is causing by the reducing the alkalinity of the concrete or by the presence of chlorides in such an aggressive environment which make reduction the cross-sectional area of the reinforcement and a loss of cohesion. Underground constructions are often found in an aggressive rock environment and the protection of steel reinforcement is more important due to their service life is 80 ? 100 years. The fibre reinforced polymers ? composite material (Fibre Reinforced Polymers ? FRP) would be possible to use as a full-fledged substitute for steel reinforcement in such conditions. The demand for composite reinforcement is increasing, using more than 10 million meters per year nowadays. GFRP (Glass Fibre Reinforced Polymers ? GFRP) reinforcement in tunnels is used for temporary support of cross-sections which must be disrupted in subsequent steps application capable of easy cutting. The FRP reinforcement in concrete structures provides several advantages, e.g. its increased durability due to its corrosion resistance. There are also other advantages of FRP composite low bulk density, high tensile strength, or electromagnetic neutrality, that all these features can make the solution more efficient for new structures and reinforcement old one. The FRP composite consist of fibres (from different material) that are placed in a polymer matrix which protects the fibres from corrosion. These fibres in the composite form reinforcement and carry important properties of the material. Special combinations of fibre with unique properties or their arrangement in the matrix give special properties to the composite. This article will deal with the different properties of GFRP and steel reinforcement and their impact on the primary lining and their comparison. The calculations and analyzes will be carried out for the Milochov tunnel.
