SPECIAL ASPECTS OF LOW-DISTURBED SUBSURFACE SITES ALLOCATION IN SOUTH-EASTERN SELVAGE OF FENNOSCANDIAN SHIELD

Abstract

High qualitative and quantitative requirements for dimension stone on the building materials market make producers update the methods used currently to assess natural fracturing in areas of interest at various levels when prospecting potential zones. As most well-exposed areas are already being quarried, new areas are most efficiently prospected using statistical and mining-geometric methods and the data obtained are analyzed. Locating dimension stone prospects is a multi-stage process. Analysis of large areas performed for this purpose may require considerable resources. A method for integrated assessment of rock massifs, developed by the authors and based on analysis of the spatial orientation of the inequidimensional fracturing of the geo-setting, is expected to reduce prospecting costs and expenses and to save time. This method was efficiently used earlier for forecasting prospects in individual intrusive massifs. More recently, the method was employed as a version of assessment of correlation of mega- and macrofracturing for assessment of a large area composed of different-aged igneous and metamorphic complexes on the Fennoscandian Shield. The quantitative indices of fracturing on mega- and macro-levels, used for analysis of the monolithic character of a massif, were estimated and verified over an area of 2500 km2. Analysis of the mega- and macro-fracturing of the entire study area and the sites around active building stone quarries has revealed some correlations of their spatial orientation. Our conclusions regarding the dimension or building stone potential of the prospects located were drawn, based on these data. The results of our studies have led us to conclude that the method proposed could be used in large areas in Precambrian basement scarps, regardless of the rock complex they are part of. The study of the formation pattern of mega- and macro-fractures in rock massifs is an efficient tool for assessment and recognition of the types of building stone at prospecting and exploration stages.
