GEOTECHNICAL INVESTIGATION AND SPATIAL ORIENTATION OF THE SEDIMENTS OF THE TOPOLA FORMATION IN THE AREA OF THE TOPOLA VILLAGE LANDSLIDES, NORTHEAST BULGARIA
Abstract
The study area is located in northeastern Bulgaria (Northern Bulgarian Black Sea Coast), between the Ikantalaka locality, Balchik municipality and the village of Bozhurets, Kavarna Municipality, Dobrich district. From an engineering geological point of view, the region falls within the Balchik Landslide Area, which is characterized by old and recent landslides with linear-stepped and packaged construction. In the formation of landslide processes in the study area, the direction of subsidence and the angle of inclination of the sediments forming the Topola Formation are essential. The purpose of the present study is to make an engineering geological characteristic of the considered landslide area and to clarify the spatial orientation of the Topola Formation and the angle of occurrence, as well as its geotechnical parameters. To achieve these goals, 5 dynamic penetration experiments (type DPH and DPSH), 11 geophysical profiles with a total length of over 1.0 km and the construction of 10 motor drillings were performed. Based on these studies, it is established that the sediments from the Topola Formation in the study area in the west-east direction dip with aninclination of 1 to 4-5 degrees to the east. The obtained 4-5 degrees refer to local landslide zones, where the relatively high slope was influenced by the landslide processes. From the interpretations of the research works in the north - south direction it is established that the layers of the Topola Formation have a dipping angle varying from 0 to 3-4 degrees in the southern direction. Undrained cohesion (Cu) and bulk weight (?n) of the sediments from the Topola Formation were determined from the geotechnical parameters through the dynamic penetration experiments (type DPH and DPSH). In addition to these two parameters, the cone resistance (Qc), the confined consolidation modulus (Eoed) and the consistency index (Ic) are also determined. These geotechnical parameters can be used to determine the coefficient of stability of landslides.
