Abstract

Modern professional geographic information systems (GIS) include a wide range of well-tuned powerful algorithms for processing and analyzing spatial data, but their use is hampered by the specifics of the information environment in which the GIS data operate. At the same time, web technologies can provide an information environment that will allow users to access GIS software from anywhere in the world. The integration of GIS and web technologies provides greater opportunities for collecting, accumulating and processing geospatial information. This creates the preconditions for a gradual transition from closed desktop software products to distributed systems that will provide users with constant access to large archives of heterogeneous data, and will also allow solving more time-consuming geo-information tasks. In this regard, it can be argued that a structured geographic information Internet system is an effective and most justified platform that can form the basis for a research information and analytical portal. However, there is still a problem, which is a significant functional limitation of most web services. For example, as a rule, they allow you to add vector objects to the map one at a time. Some of them can perform batch publishing of data, but the data are rather strict. Desktop geographic information systems are rich in functionality, but at the same time have a heavily loaded user interface. Due to it, mastering desktop GIS seems to be a difficult task for untrained users. To ensure user convenience when creating thematic maps, a new web service has been developed enabling to work with heterogeneous geospatial data from various sources. This paper covers some of the technological possibilities of creating thematic maps using web services and desktop geographic information systems. The developed tools will make it possible to expand the functionality of the service with the capabilities of the programming language and the libraries used with the possibility of detailed control of the entered information and protection against failures for controlling the integrity of information.
