A SPATIAL ASSESSMENT OF THE ROMANIAN NEARSHORE WIND CONDITIONS
Abstract
In this study, based on a relatively high resolution wind database (ERA5), an assessment of the nearshore wind conditions in the western part of the Black Sea was conducted. From the reanalysis of the wind datasets provided by the ERA5 product, significant differences between the onshore and offshore wind power were identified, with the offshore regions being more resourceful than the onshore ones. Generally, the appeal of a site for a wind farm project is determined throughout a classification of the wind classes, symbolized by C1-C7, the higher classes being considered the most favourable for such renewable projects since they have a more significant contribution to the wind turbine power curve and thus producing more electrical power. Since most offshore wind turbines usually operate at 70-100 m height above sea level and ERA5 reported the wind speed not only at 10 m but also at 100 m, in this study, a height of 100 m was selected for assessing the wind energy. Furthermore, a comparison was carried out between the values provided by ERA5 and the ones adjusted using a logarithmic law. Finally, the characteristics of some offshore wind turbines that already successfully operate were used in the present study to evaluate their efficiency in terms of operating and rated capacity.
