Abstract

This study provides preliminary results on grain size distribution in the Albian Ciucas Conglomerates located in southern Eastern Carpathians, Romania. The present research is the first quantitative study of Ciucas Conglomerates using modern techniques aiming at understanding basic transport processes and depositional environment of this unit. Grain size analysis was carried out on digitized contours of clasts from photographs of representative outcrops in the Ciucas Conglomerate area comprising 18 photo-sample locations. The dimension of the conglomerate clasts varies from less than 0.5 cm to more than 10 cm. The largest measured cobble is around 18 cm in diameter. Most of the conglomerate elements, especially the larger ones, are fairly well rounded. Sorting of the deposits is very poor suggesting together with the other textural parameters that Ciucas Conglomerates have been transported by gravity flow processes similar to the conglomerates from the Lower Member of Bucegi Formation making the Ciucas Conglomerates a laterally equivalent and a distal facies of the Bucegi Formation.
