Abstract

The presence of heavy metals in environmental factors remains among the most important concerns at national and international levels, while at the same time novel biomaterials usually derived from agricultural wastes are designed and tested for their removal below admitted limits. In this respect efficiency of biosorption of Hg2+ and Pb2+ on corn cobs have been studied for different working parameters: initial solution concentrations of heavy metals, particle size of biomass and temperature. The kinetic model for pseudo-second order provided the best fitting of the experimental data. The poor fitting of the experimental data into equations characteristic for the diffusion processes lead to the conclusion that the process rate-determining step is the ions coupling with the sorbent active centers by physical-chemical interactions.
