Abstract

The paper concerns the pores systems characterization of the Miocene mudstone samples provided by mercury injection capillary pressure (MICP) method. This analysis is the progressive intrusion of mercury into a porous structure under stringently controlled pressure. Since mercury does not wet most substances and does not spontaneously penetrate pores by capillary action, it must be forced into the pores by the application of external pressure. The required equilibrated pressure is inversely proportional to the size of the pores, which constitutes a fundamental assumption of the MICP method. Core samples were taken from the S-34 and S-37 boreholes from depth interval of 1850 пїЅ 2698 meters. The wells are located in an important gas province of Poland пїЅ the Miocene Carpathian Foredeep Basin (southeastern Poland). Results of the MICP method allowed detailed analysis of the pore space and estimation of the crucial petrophysical parameters пїЅ porosity, permeability, skeletal and bulk density, specific surface area and average pore size diameter. Analyzed mudstone samples reveal porous type of reservoir space, characterized by predominant proportion of nanopores (< 0,1 ?m) (90,7% on average) with average pore size diameter of 0,01 ?m, which results in moderate values of effective porosity (7,8% on average) and low values of permeability (0,06 mD on average). The data obtained from the MICP analysis exhibit relatively strong correlation and suggest the unconventional type of the analysed Miocene rocks.
