Abstract

Waste poses a growing problem is the contemporary world. The volume of household waste per resident continues to increase at a staggering rate. In line with the EU requirements, growing proportions of waste should be recycled, and Poland is expected to recycle 50% of its entire waste stream by 2020. Biological waste can also be recycled, but the recovery rate for this waste fraction is close to zero in Poland. The above applies particularly to biological waste from households. The quantity of OFMSW generated by a standard household was analyzed. The main OFMSW fractions in household waste were identified. The quantity of waste in selected fractions was determined on an annual basis. The results were used to determine the C:N ratio of biological waste and the potential amount of energy that could be recovered from organic waste. Two methods of OFMSW recycling in the household with energy recovery were described: hotbeds and greenhouse heating with compost ? using only OFMSW. The proposed methods were evaluated for their energy efficiency, profitability and environmental impact. The results of the study indicate that OFMSW produced by households can be effectively used as a heat source for hotbeds and greenhouses. This solution will increase plant germination rates in spring and prolong the growing season in autumn. Composted organic waste is also an excellent source of high-quality fertilizer. Above all, the proposed methods will increase the volume of recycled waste and contribute to the achievement of the recycling target in Poland.
