Abstract

The article presents the possibilities of using post-mining facilities and areas for tourist and geo-education purposes, as well as the specificity and conditions of such ventures, from local initiatives to projects with international renown. Factors deciding about the success of investments using post-mining relics were analyzed, mainly in terms of conditions for the implementation of projects for protection and securing such remnants as well as economic and social results of the project in the long-term perspective. Issues related to the importance of conducting research and development works on mining heritage objects and their significance as a specific type of tourist products were discussed. Analyses of conditions related to the implementation of such projects, including in particular technical, formal-legal, environmental and social, were made on selected examples from Poland, Slovakia and Spain, among others the Historic Bochnia Salt Mine - on the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage List (Poland), ?Bana Starovsechsvatych? in Hodrusa-Hamre (Slovakia), mining heritage facilities in the Linares and La Carolina region (Spain). The nature and impact of the analyzed projects on the economic and social environment indicates the variety of opportunities to use mining heritage objects and the importance of such initiatives in the development of regions.
