INTEGRATING BLUE-GREEN INFRASTRUCTURE FOR CLIMATE CHANGE MITIGATION IN RURAL AREA - SANDANSKI REGION, BULGARIA
Abstract
Blue-green infrastructure (BGI) is part of European policies to address climate change that has occurred in recent years. In Sandanski region, Bulgaria, data from the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ERA5) show that since 1979, air temperatures have risen by 2.3 degrees Celsius, with an upward trend. Meanwhile, there is no permanent decrease in precipitation, but there are extreme events and alternating cycles of floods and droughts. BGI can mitigate climate change by cooling the effect of vegetation and water infrastructure and naturally decrease the air temperature. It can also impact on the hydrological cycle and runoff coefficients, to promote biodiversity, regulate soil erosion and contribute to disaster risk reduction. In this study, a solution for rural areas is presented, which is combining green roof, storm-water tank system, erosion control structure and permaculture pond. Permaculture ponds have multiple functions such as irrigation water storage, being a freshwater ecosystem, recreation (swimming, canoeing), microclimate moderation and sun reflection. Greenery on buildings has a positive sanitary-hygienic effect and dust retention. It creates not only a natural environment, but the peak load of the sewage system during intense rain is retained by green roofs. The green roof improves several technological qualities of the buildings - it normalizes the operating conditions and extends the life of the waterproofing, increases the sound insulation, and regulates the thermal regime in the buildings. This paper shows the design considerations of permaculture pond by practical example of small lake with irrigation, recreation and storm-water retention functions.
