GEOLOGICAL SETTING AND PETROGRAPHICAL CHARACTERISTICS OF THE BOZKIR OPHIOLITIC MELANGE, BOZKIR (KONYA- TURKEY)
Abstract
In the study area the lowermost unit is the autochthonous Geyikdagı unit (Upper Cambrian-Lower Ordovician Seydisehir Formation, Upper Jurassic Hacialabaz formation, Upper Cretaceous Cokelen diabase and Upper Cretaceous Saytepe formation). The Bolkardagı unit (Devonian-Lower-Middle Carboniferous Hocalar formation, Upper Permian, Taskent formation and Jurassic-Upper Cretaceous Sinatdagı formation) rests allochthonously on the Geyikdagı Unit. The Bozkir unit (Bozkir melange with ophiolite and (Mahmuttepe limestone, Kuztepe limestone, Sogucak limestone, Erenlertepe limestone, of Boyalitepe group) is also allochthonous on the Bolkardagı unit. The Miocene Kiziltepe volcanites which are completely silicified cut all the above mentioned units. The topmost unit is the Upper Miocene– Pliocene Gundugun formation. The Bozkir unit cropping out in a NE-SW belt in the area consists of the Bozkir ophiolitic melange (represented by serpentinite, pyroxenite, gabbro, radiolarite, chert, limestone) and the Boyalitepe group (represented by limestones with different lithologies, facies and ages). The Bozkir ophiolitic melange of the Bozkir unit which is the main interest of the present study shows different compositional, lithological and alteration features locally. In general it consists of gabro, altered gabro, diabase, spilitic basalt, serpentinites and, deep marine deposits like as radiolarites and cherts. Petrographical examinations of gabbro samples of the Bozkir melange show plagioclase ( \% 55), clinopyroxene ( \% 35), chlorite ( \% 5), prehnite ( \% 5), amphibolite ( \% 3) and opaque minerals ( \% 2) composition and diabase samples shows plagioclase ( \% 39), clinopyroxene ( \% 15), chlorite ( \% 30), olivine ( \% 7), orthopyroxene ( \% 4), calcite ( \% 4) and opaque minerals ( \% 1) composition. Petrographical examinations of altered serpentinite samples show clinopyroxene ( \% 25), serpentine ( \% 68), olivine ( \% 4) and opaque minerals ( \% 3) composition and spillitic basalt samples show plagioclase ( \% 25) and clinopyroxene phenocrystals ( \% 15), plagioclase microlites ( \% 20), volcanic glass ( \% 23), chlorite ( \% 15) and opaque minerals ( \% 2) composition. These data suggest advanced alteration of the Bozkır ophiolitic melange rocks.
