Abstract

Over the last years the appliance of Computed tomography (CT) on lacustrine and marine sediment cores is continuously increasing, since it provides a fast, high resolution and nondestructive technique in the investigation of sediment characteristics. Micromorphological features that are not clear through macroscopic examination of the core, can now be further analyzed through high resolution 3D visualization. The present study aims on the use of this method as a tool for the clarification of different sedimentological facies, sediment structures and characteristics, on a 6 m varve sediment core retrieved from Vouliagmeni Lake, Greece. Through high resolution analysis of the Hounsfield Units and bulk density values as well as the 3D examination of the sediment structure, different facies were determined throughout the core. Two different types of laminated sequences were recognized, with the boundaries of each lamination clearly distinguished. Furthermore, organic rich layers as well as soft sediments deformations were detected in parts of the core through a 3D intensity model that was constructed for the core
