POZZOLANIC ACTIVITY ASSESSMENT OF SOME MINERAL ADDITIVES USED IN ROLLER COMPACTED CONCRETE FOR DAM CONSTRUCTION

Abstract

Currently, many researchers around the world have been focused on applying existing natural resources beside artificial and agricultural waste in RCC mixtures for dam construction to improve the properties of the resulting concrete, produce a greener RCC, and therefore, to protect surrounding environment. The aim of this experimental study is to estimate and compare pozzolanic activity of some active mineral additives used in roller compacted concrete for dam construction by using saturated lime solution method. The tested mineral materials are: fly ash and waste basalt powder (as waste materials) beside scoria and volcanic tuff (as existing natural resources). The most important results of the experiment indicate the following: according the amount of absorbed lime by every additive in the 4th and 30th days from the beginning of the experiment, all of these additives could be considered as additives with high pozzolanic activity; during the first four days, the fastest additive to absorb lime is scoria, whereas fly ash shows the slowest rate of lime fixation; after 30 days, it is noticed that fly ash shows the highest pozzolanic activity; in dam construction, applying of roller compacted concrete, which contains an adequate proportions of the four tested additives, leads to reduce cement consumption and therefore, produce a greener concrete, which has many ecological and economical benefits.
