FEATURES OF THE MERCURY DISTRIBUTION IN BOTTOM SEDIMENTS OF THE DON RIVER DELTA AND MUD LAKE PILENKINO
Abstract
Bottom sediments are a specific component of aquatic ecosystems. They are actively involved in the accumulation, redistribution and mass transfer of chemical elements, including heavy metals. They can contribute to the purification of the water column, due to its depositing properties. However, they can also serve as a source of secondary pollution, as a result of the transition of pollutants into the suspended matter. The intensity of accumulation and migration of substances is directly dependent on the lithological, physico-chemical and biogeochemical properties of sediments, and from external factors, such as the type of source of receipt of elements and its geographical proximity, hydrometeorological conditions and hydrological regime. This article contains the analysis of features of spatial distribution of mercury in bottom sediments in the Don River delta and mud lake Pilenkino. The regularities of changes in the metal content along the vertical section of bottom sediments are studied. Determined background concentration of total mercury, which is characteristic for bottom sediments of the lower reaches of the Don River. Precipitation related to technogenic formations was determined.
