Abstract

The Vltava River and its riverine landscape has had a significant importance for the Czech nation, culture, economy and transport for centuries. The river itself, landscape and life of people tightly connected with Vltava have undergone massive changes which can be revealed from the old maps, historical photographs, archival documents and also personal testimonies. The main aim of the project is to show the vanished face of the river depicted on the beautiful old maps and photographs via modern cartographic methods and register relevant objects, data and information from various sources in the single easily accessible information system. The most important cartographic sources and its processing are mentioned. Database of the river related objects, historical and present, was created and is being fulfilled. Cartographic data are supplemented by the old photographs and other documents. Web mapping application combining various layers and data was created to access the results of the project to the general public. The old maps and plans are also the base for the three dimensional reconstruction of the former historical landscape including important buildings. 3D models might be visualised in interactive scenes or fly-by videos.
