STABILITY ASSESSMENT OF ROAD SLOPES, SW ANGOLA
Abstract
This study comprehends the stability assessment of seven slopes with Pre-Cambrian rocks and located in traffic-access areas of SW Angola, one (Slope 1) is located on the road access from Lubango to Tundavala Gorge, another slope belongs to the CaholoпїЅs area near Humpata (Slope 2) and five of them (Slopes 3 to 7) are located on the LebaпїЅs Sierra, along the sinuous hair-pinned sections of the National Road 280. Slope 1 is composed by quartzites, volcanic rocks and lutites. Slope 2 shows sandstones, lutites and quartzites. Slope 3 is composed by sound, weathered granites and debris deposits. Slopes 4 to 7 show predominately quartzites and also debris deposits. The main slope movements identified were rockfalls that occurred on all of the studied slopes, wedge, planar failures and debris flows. Toppling failures were identified in Slope 4.Various factors such as lithology, geological structure, morphology, climate action and vegetation were object of analysis for the characterization of these movements. The Rockfall Hazard Rating System (RHRS) was used to estimate the risk associated with road slopes landslides. In the RHRS system are used parameters such as: slope height, ditch effectiveness, average vehicle risk, decision sight distance, roadway dimension, geological characteristics, block size, climate and presence of water and also rockfall history. The results obtained in the different study stages permitted the establishment of mitigation and prevention measures to avoid future slope stability problems.
