MAGNETIC METHODS FOR DELINEATION OF HEAVY METAL POLLUTION IN BURGAS REGION
Abstract
Magnetic susceptibility mapping and rock magnetic characterization of topsoils from southeastern Bulgaria near the Black sea coast was carried out for delineation of the anthropogenic pollution. The presence of strongly magnetic parent material (volcanites, volcanoclastic sediments) and various soil types (Vertisols, Luvisols, Chromic Cambisols, Planosols, Fluvisols) were taken into account by using normalization of the field susceptibilities to the median susceptibility value, calculated separately for each soil type. The influence of anthropogenic pollution on the magnetic signal is evaluated considering the distribution of field susceptibility values according to soil type. Significant correlation was found between field susceptibility and the content of Zn, Cu and Co. The main pollution source in the region is the Cu-mining activities, which cause atmospheric dustfall of strongly magnetic particles on the soil surface. The petrochemical industry in the area is not a source of significant magnetic enhancement and heavy metal pollution of the topsoils.
